BIO

StarFish Author Jeff Thayer was brought up on the East Coast on the oceans in the summers and in the woods most of the rest of the year. In his early educational years he became a committed naturalist integrating his education with practical wisdoms drawn from indigenous cultures. He’s been devoted to organic farming and gardening for over 30 years bringing a renaissance man viewpoint to building soils using archaea which supports mycorrhizal fungus for root health and plant nutrient uptake. Graduating with degrees in history and environmental sciences, Jeff has followed closely developments with the Human Genome Project and later the Microbiome Project eventually enrolling in the “Gut Check: Exploring Your Microbiome” three month class offered by the University of Colorado (Boulder). For the past 10 years Jeff has also pursued mastering the skills necessary to ferment foods and water kefirs which has further enhanced his understanding of haloarchaea found in unrefined sea salts. A long time follower of fermentation and microbiome experts Sandor Katz [Wild Fermentation], Dr. Natasha Campbell McBride [Gut & Psychology Syndrome], Dr. Jeffrey Leach [Human Food Project], Stephen Harrod Buhner [Sacred Plant Medicine], Jeff has connected dots between the use of fermented foods and overall health in indigenous cultures. He’s grown microgreens and fermented various sauerkrauts and kimchis making them available at farmer’s markets. Jeff has taught classes and workshops on fermentation of food and kefirs, and has consulted with home gardeners on creating edible landscapes and farmscapes using permaculture and food forest practices. Currently Jeff is a support manager over fresh (produce, deli, meat and dairy) as well as dry grocery at Walmart. His career at Walmart began in the Lawn & Garden Department which is a part of the fictionalized setting of the novel, StarFish - The Evolution of People at Work.

Author's Field Notes
August 25, 2016: I started writing StarFish thinking I knew where it started and where it ended. It began as a book that would be complete in itself. One day while sitting outside next to my goldfish tank experiment, the Muse tapped me on the shoulder and suggested an eBook format and a Trilogy. I thought just like a Muse ... more to do ... bigger project. Eventually, I put down my notes and just let the storytelling come through ... it was as if I had already written the StarFish story and all I was doing was writing and then typing it. Storytelling has always been a real passion with me. It started in the 1990's when I'd drive my chldren to school. It was a half hour drive. I'd seen the film "Out of Africa" and the scene when Robert Redford says in front of the fireplace to Meryl Streep, "Tell us a story." One person would begin with the first line or so ... totally fictional and the storyteller would continue wholly from imagination until it was complete. So I did that with my children. They loved it, because they knew it would be inspirational and it was totally made up seemingly from nowhere.

I am truly grateful for where the story of StarFish went, despite not being in control of it ... not at least at a conscious level. A lot in StarFish may be new to the reader. I am sure of that. What I set out to do is provide insights for transforming the experience of most in a 40 hour per week job. I do it. You do it and we share that on this journey. Readers of the draft manuscript have asked me in different ways, are you Jax? My response is always the same. "No. But I would like to be."

Follow current updates as they arrive on my BLOG. And please be sure to watch backstory videos I produced from the video links above. There is a lot there and I will update it as it seems appropriate or as questions come into me from emails. I've tried to give readers a lot more information there, which I just cannot put into the novel.
So have a great day. Make it a masterpiece.
